When
Eustace Bellinger Pinckney of Walterboro, Colleton County, South Carolina,
serving in the Confederate War, met and fell in love with lovely young
Mary Martha Porcher, called "Daisy" of Calhoun Plantation, Bluffton, South
Carolina, he wasted little time before asking her father, James William
Porcher for permission to seek her hand in marriage. To his endearing
words of proposal Miss Daisy politely responded, " I thank you for your
friendship Mr. Pinckney." Out came Eustace's desperate appeal - "Damn
the friendship, Miss Daisy, I want love!"
After
the war in 1867, Eustace and Daisy with their little children moved from
Walterboro, South Carolina to Calhoun Plantation to care for her aging
father.
