The
Pinckneys came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066 from Picquigny
(whence their name) in Picardy Province, France. From the time of the Norman
Invasion to the 16th Century, the Pinckneys were well established in the
north, south, east, west, and middle England. In 1615, the St. Andrews Church
register, Bishop Auckland, Durham County, England, recorded the marriage
of Richard Pinckney and Grace Archer, the grandparents of Thomas Pinckney
(1666-1703) who settled in Charleston in 1692.
